Why inspect Fire Doors?

Fire Resisting Doors are an essential element of your building's passive fire defence to allow all employees and visitors to escape from a building safely in the event of a fire, any defects in your fire resisting doors could lead to fatal consequences to personnel by becoming overcome by smoke and or fire.

How often should Fire Doors be Inspected?

The frequency of inspections will depend on the nature of your business and the frequency of use of the door. BS9999:2017 recommends that Fire Resisting Doors are inspected on a 6 monthly basis by a competent person, to ensure they function correctly and perform to designed standard, however realistically an office environment with up to 10 employees for example may only require a formal inspection annually, whereas a Care home, Hotel or House of multiple occupancies may need to be inspected every 3 months due to their excessive use.

What the law says

Article 17 of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO/FSO) states it is a legal requirement to ensure that fire-resisting doors and escape doors are installed and adequately maintained in order for them to be fit for purpose.

How long does a Fire door Inspection take?

Subject to the condition of the doors and the frame an inspection can typically take 20-30 minutes per door.
